Omega Shipping Agency is rooted in a maritime tradition as old as Port Louis itself.

Long before cranes and container terminals, ships calling at Port Louis lay at anchor in the harbour, and everything that came aboard or ashore (cargo, water, provisions and stores) had to be carried across the water. This was the age of lighterage, when fleets of small barges known as chalands shuttled between the anchored vessels and the shore, and when ships were moored and secured by rope and by hand.

Among the communities who made this work their calling were the Koknis, Muslims of Konkani origin from the western coast of India who settled around the harbour of Port Louis. In the port’s manual age they were its moorsmen and lightermen: they moored and anchored the cargo ships, and loaded and unloaded them, barge by barge. It was skilled and dangerous work that earned the community a respected place in the life of the port.

That tradition sits within an even older story. The first seamen of Port Louis were the Lascars, mariners from the Indian subcontinent. From 1735, Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais brought Lascar crews and craftsmen to help build the new harbour and its infrastructure. Many stayed, settling in the quarter still known today as Camp des Lascars, where in 1805 the community built the first mosque in Mauritius.

Mechanisation eventually transformed the port: the chalands gave way to quays and cranes, the moorsmen to shore gangs and machinery. But the vocation did not disappear; it evolved.
